• Didascalia: 3. The red banquet. 1961, oil and collage on canvas, 60 x 60 inches. Collection: Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The painting is based on an incident which occured in 1854. A banquet was given in London for the principal European revolutionary refugees... Herzen, Garibaldi, Mazzini and Kossuth, among others. Ironically the banquet was given by the American ambassador, James Buchanan, who was to become president. An image of Bakunin occurs superimposed on the figure of Herzen at the left. A Corbusier house provided the setting.
