Flags on the Altar of the Country
- Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
- Caption: 149. Flags on the Altar of the Country (1915). Oil on canvas, 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 inches. Collection Benedetta Marinetti, Rome. In front of Balla´s abstracted image of the Victor Emanuel II monument are groups of Italian flags and a large, encompassing curved form suggesting the noise of the Interventionist demonstration held in favor or italian partecipation in the First World War. The predominance of dark blue-gray colors suggest that the day was overcast. The Futurists declared: "We wish to glorify War - the only hygiene for the world - militarism, patriotism, the distructive arm of the Anarchist, the beautiful Ideas that kill, the contempt for woman" (Article 9, from the "Initial Manifesto of Futurism", February 20, 1909).
