Abstract Speed

  • Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
  • Caption: 115. Abstract Speed. (1913). Oil on canvas, 74 3/8 x 118 3/8 inches. Collection Balla, Rome. This large painting of speeding cars at night strongly resembles fig. 114. The repeated curved lines of speed produce space modulators as the car rips through the tangible space. The strong oblique lines emphasize the dynamic force behind the lines of speed. Here the driver is partially visible in the contrasting light. Speed had become the subject of visual analysis and Balla attempted to render motion (space-time) on a static plane. Note that in each of Balla´s studies of speeding cars, the car is speeding from right to left but, as the spectator´s eye is accustomed to reading images from left to right, the sense of speed is accentuated
