The rotating tires of the speeding car from a series of vortexes which interpenetrate with the city street and the oblique lines that radiate from the steering wheel and the wheels of the car. In the "Initial Manifesto of Futurism", February 20, 1909, the Futurists wrote: We shall sing of the man at the steering wheel, whose ideal stem transfixes the earth, rushing over the circuit of her orbit. the lines which form large projecting angles represent the atmosphere, and interpenetrate with the roof of the car, the protruding leather folds of the convertible top (note fig. 101), and the arched doorways of a building in Rome
