Flight of Swifts

  • Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
  • Caption: 93. Flight of Swifts. (1913). Tempera on paper, 20 x 30 inches. Collection Nelson Rockefeller, New York. In the summer months great flights on swifts swoop around the roof-tops of Rome. Balla observed them for hours from his balcony. The white "coming and going" lines represent Balla himself going back and forth on the balcony, the "impalpable continuous motion". The angles of the drain-pipe and the slats of the shutters interpenetrate with the birds in flight and his "impalpable continuous motion". This was one of Balla´s favourite expressions: L´impalpabile andamentale.
