Rhythm of the Violinist

  • Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
  • Caption: 84. Rhythm of the Violinist. (1912). Oil on canvas, 20 1/2 x 2 91/2 inches. Collection Eric Estorik, on loan Tate Gallery, London. Painted in Dusseldorf, the hand is Mr. Lowenstein´s, a lawyer and amateur violinist whose wife had been a pupil of Balla´s. The trapezoidal shape of the canvas (within a rectangular frame) was also used by Balla in some of his studies of light and color (see figs. 74 and 80). It is interesting to compare the rendering of movement of the hand playing the violin with Bragaglia´s photograph of the typing hands and to note that Balla studied the violin as a child
