iridescent Interpenetration No. 5. Eucalyptus

  • Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
  • Caption: 68. Iridescent Interpenetration No. 5. Eucalyptus. (1914). Oil on canvas, 39 3/8 x 47 1/4 inches. Private collection, U.S.A. This rythmic abstraction of shapes and colors in greens, yellows, and blues was inspired by the leaves of the eucalyptus tree behind his studio. In 1900, he even wrote from Paris asking for eucalyptus leaf. M. Minnaert, in his book on Light and Color (p. 336) explains the appearance of green leaves under different light conditions: "A leaf on a tree is usually much more strongly illuminated on one side than on the other, and the color is essentially determined by whether we are looking at the side that is directly illuminated or the other side. In the former case, the light sent to us from the leaf is partly reflected at its surface, so that the color becomes lighter but greyer. Moreover, when the leaf is illuminated from the front (relative to the observer), a bluish hue mingles with the green, and when from the back, a yellow hue"
