Girl Running on a Balcony

  • Author of the reproduced work: Balla Giacomo
  • Caption: 66. Girl Running on a Balcony (1912). oil on canvas, 49 1/4 x 49 1/4 inches. Civica Galleria d´Arte Moderna, Grassi Collection, Milan. From an open door inside his studio, Balla observed his daughter Luce running back and forth on the balcony outside. the air appeared to vibrate. Luce wore black boots and a blue ribbon linen dress; her pigtails were tied with blue ribbon. Her face and hands were pink, her hair brown. These vibrant colors and the dark railings of the balcony interenetrate with the rhythmic left-right movements of the girl. The feeling of movement is heightened by the staccato technique with which the paint was applied. The pavement is a violet-gray. Balla always said (according to his daughters), "Use pure color - never mix"
