Painted in the summer of 1912 at Montepulciano, in the Chianti wine region, during a visit to one of his student. A swaying sparkling chain links the running dog to its owner who is walking. Balla uses a varied steccato technique in applying the paint in graduated brush strokes. The abstract "atmospheric" ground represents the white dust of the Tuscan countryside. When exhibited in 1912 in the Caffè Aragno in Rome, the public´s reaction was violent, and several spectators struck the painting with their walking sticks
