Balla selects the ordinary door of a store as the subject for his painting and "crops" the image as in a photograph. The doors of the bankrupt store were sealed a court order. Children, oblivious of the human drama, awkwardly printed their names and scribbled numbers on it using blue chalk borroewd from a neighboring seamstress. Severini noted that "on a corner of the stone steps Balla has renderd spit magnificently"
