In a letter to his fiacée Elisa, Balla wrote: The portrait of that young lady is finished and it turned out well, only it will not interest the layman very much because the young lady is not very beautiful nor is she charming. The painting will be of interest to artist because I made a special study of the way the young lady walks and I have secceded in giving the illusion that she is coming forward in a garden where one senses the presence of autumn
